Science runs deep.
So do our roots.

Our Mission

Our mission is to comprehensively study and monitor the deep reef ecosystems off the coast of west Hawaiʻi to enhance scientific understanding, promote conservation, and support the sustainable use of these critical resources for the benefit of local communities.

Meet the Team

We are a team of marine scientists, researchers, divers, and community advocates committed to exploring, understanding, and protecting Hawaiʻi’s deep reef ecosystems. Grounded in science and guided by purpose, we work at the intersection of research, discovery, and local connection, because the health of our oceans and the resilience of our communities are deeply intertwined.

At TARE, we believe that meaningful science happens when research and community come together. Our approach blends rigorous fieldwork with a deep respect for place, people, and tradition. By focusing on Hawaiʻi’s deep reef ecosystems, we aim to fill critical knowledge gaps and empower sustainable practices, always guided by local voices and long-term impact. We don’t just study the ocean; we partner with it.

Our Story

TARE began as a spark between a few friends who shared a deep love for exploration and the ocean. What started as an idea for black coral site mapping slowly evolved. Back in 2022, Bryant, Nate, and Neal began dreaming about taking more intentional, deeper dives; not just for the thrill, but with a purpose.

The team soon began exploring mesophotic reef zones with a focus on fish behavior, biodiversity, and habitat structure, realizing that the stories hidden below the surface were too important not to tell. That passion grew into a mission: to create a nonprofit dedicated to advancing deep reef science, conservation, and community connection in West Hawaiʻi.

Today, TARE brings together researchers, divers, and locals to better understand and protect these vital ecosystems. And while the dream of black coral mapping still lives on the horizon, every dive now serves something bigger—science that runs deep, for a future that lasts.

Our Vision
